Invisalign can be a game-changer for your child’s smile—but only if it’s used the right way. While these clear aligners are more comfortable and less noticeable than braces, they do require some responsibility to work properly. Whether your child is just getting started or needs a quick refresher, here are the top Invisalign “dos and don’ts” every family should know.
DO: Wear Your Aligners for the Necessary Time
Invisalign only works if your child actually wears the trays. They should keep them in for 20 to 22 hours every day, only removing them to eat, drink (anything besides water), and brush their teeth. Missing wear time can delay treatment and even reverse progress!
DON’T: Eat with Aligners In
Eating while wearing Invisalign trays can damage them, trap food, and cause staining. Make sure your child removes their aligners before every meal and snack. Even soft foods like crackers or fruit can warp the plastic over time, so it’s best just to take them off.
DO: Clean Aligners Daily
Encourage your child to rinse their trays every time they’re removed. They should also gently brush them at least once a day with a soft toothbrush and clear, unscented liquid soap. This helps prevent buildup, odors, and discoloration. Also, hot water is a no-go! It can warp the plastic, making the trays useless, so stick to lukewarm rinses.
DON’T: Skip Check-Ins
Invisalign still requires regular visits to the orthodontist to check progress and receive new trays. Skipping appointments can delay treatment or cause the aligners to stop fitting properly. Always stick to the appointments provided by your child’s orthodontic team, so they can help keep their treatment on schedule!
DO: Store Aligners in Their Case
Accidents happen, especially at school or during sports. Make sure your child keeps their Invisalign case with them at all times. Putting aligners in a napkin or pocket often ends with them being thrown out or broken! While this isn’t the end of the world, it can throw treatment off while waiting for a replacement.
Invisalign is a great option for kids and teens—but only when used as directed. Following these simple dos and don’ts will help your child stay on track and finish treatment with a healthy, confident smile. When in doubt, reach out to their orthodontist for support and guidance.
