Phase 1 Orthodontics
Phase 1 Orthodontics is a type of care Dr. Podray-Donovan can provide before a child receives braces to shorten their overall treatment time. Basically, she’ll work to fix any alignment issues found in the baby teeth so that when the adult teeth come in, they are as straight as possible. During Phase 1, she can also help a child break certain habits that could lead to problems down the road, such as thumb/finger sucking and tongue thrusting.
Traditional Metal Braces
For young children, traditional metal braces are still the most effective way to straighten their teeth. The brackets and wires can correct even the most complicated orthodontic problems, and their durability makes them ideal for energetic, rambunctious children. In addition to straightening the teeth, Dr. Podray-Donovan can also use braces to increase the size of a child’s airway, which can help them sleep better and even avoid a disorder like sleep apnea.
Invisalign® Clear Aligners
For image-conscious teens, noticeable metal braces simply won’t do. That’s why Dr. Podray-Donovan is happy to offer a more aesthetically-friendly option with Invisalign. Instead of brackets and wires, the teeth are shifted using a series of clear plastic aligner trays that practically disappear when worn. In addition to their discreet appearance, Invisalign trays are removable as well, making it easy for a child to keep their teeth clean, plus they can maintain their regular diet throughout treatment.
Space Maintainers
If a child loses a baby tooth too early, this can lead to the surrounding teeth drifting into the space, making it difficult for the incoming adult tooth to erupt correctly. To stop this from happening, Dr. Podray-Donovan can place a space maintainer to do exactly that—keep the space open for the new tooth so it can come in unobstructed. With this approach, we can stop many orthodontic issues from developing in the first place!
